City keeps the flow going with 16km of pipes replaced in March

During March, the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate successfully replaced 16 095m of pipes across Cape Town, reaching 89% of its targeted 50 000m of water pipes and 89% of its targeted 100 000m of sewer pipes for this financial year.
‘Investing in our reticulation network helps the City reduce water wastage by upgrading old infrastructure and addressing any leaks, which supports the City's call to save water and be water-wise,’ said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.
To date, over 44 659m of water pipes and 89 454m of sewer pipes have been replaced across the city since the start of July 2024. This is part of the City’s annual proactive infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme. The City accelerated its pipe replacement efforts for the 2024/2025 financial year by investing just over R523 million to replace aged water and sanitation infrastructure.
In March 2025, the following replacements were made:
A total of 3 513m of water pipes were replaced in Simon's Town, Hout Bay, Glencairn, Kommetjie, Bergvliet, Retreat, Ottery, Tokai, Fish Hoek, Wynberg, Eerste River, Boston, Bellville, Sea Point, Goodwood and Panorama.
A total of 12 582m of sewer pipes were replaced In Elsies River, Parow Valley, Gugulethu, Claremont, Panorama, Montague Gardens, Table View, Brackenfell, Bellville, Sonstraal Heights, Uitsig and Kuils River.
